Update on measles outbreak declared on Merseyside

A measles outbreak has been declared on Merseyside. There are 13 confirmed and 16 suspected cases ranging in age from nine months to adults aged in their 20s. Six people, four children and two adults, required treatment in hospital. This compares to just one confirmed case on Merseyside in the first six weeks of 2011 and one in the corresponding period of 2010.

10 February 2012, 1400hrs. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has this week been alerted by the Spanish public health authorities about a further case of Legionnaires’ Disease in a UK resident who stayed at the Diamante Beach Hotel in Calpe, Costa Blanca, as well as two French cases. This brings the total number of UK residents associated with this cluster to 12, with three deaths.

EXTENDED HOURS

clock_6 It is the policy of the Primary Care Trust to improve access to primary medical care by "extending" practice opening hours.

As a result of this policy and the wishes of our patients as expressed through the practice survey it is our intention in the near future to increase the number of appointments by opening between:

7.00am and 8.00am on specific days
6.30pm and 8.00pm on specific days
7.45am and 10:15am on alternate Saturdays

These appointments will be for pre-booked routine consultations only.

The Out Of Hours service will not be effected in any way and will remain from 6.30pm until 8.00am the following day.

There is no requirement for a doctor to carry out "Home Visits" during "Extended " hours.

The practice telephone system will only operate during "core" hours as previously stated.

When We Are Closed

closed If you require to be seen by a doctor outside the normal opening hours of this surgery please ring our usual telephone number – 0844 477 3580 and listen to the recording.

You will be able to get direct access to the "Out Of Hours" service by then pressing 1 or by telephoning the number given.

A doctor will always be available on that number to give telephone advice or you may be advised to attend a local Primary Care Centre (situated at Upton Hospital, Slough or St Marks Hospital, Maidenhead) in order to see a doctor.

In the case of urgent need when the practice is closed you can call NHS Direct (0845 4647) to speak to a triage nurse. Your needs will be assessed and advice offered or arrangements made for you to see a doctor.

Please do not ask to see a doctor out of hours unless you genuinely cannot wait until the surgery re-opens.

Call 999 in an emergency. Chest pains and / or shortness of breath constitute an emergency.
