Whooping cough cases increase

Cases of whooping cough (pertussis) reported to the Health Protection Agency (HPA) in England and Wales have more than doubled from 421 cases in 2010 to 1040 in 2011. Increases in levels of whooping cough are seen every three to four years and figures in 2011 are in line with cases reported in the last peak year of 2008.

They provide a treatment room service that includes blood testing, dealing with minor trauma, ear syringing, ECG’s, dressings and assisting with minor surgery.

Their expertise covers a variety of specialities including asthma management, Stop Smoking advice, diabetes management, coronary heart disease management, hypertension, cytology, travel vaccinations, child immunisations, family planning and advice on lifestyle management.

Community Midwives

The initial assessment of a woman with a positive pregnancy test is carried out by the GP. Thereafter every antenatal patient is seen regularly either by the GP or midwife at the antenatal clinic based at this surgery. We share care of our patients with Wexham Park Hospital where antenatal patients attend for scans and specialist assessment. Postnatal care is carried out by the midwife and Health Visitors and the Postnatal Examination is carried out by your GP.

Health Visitors

The Health Visitors are currently based at Burnham Health Centre and can be contacted Monday to Friday between 9.00am-10.00am and 4.30pm-5.00pm or by leaving a message on 01628 662010.

They are able to advise on health care and the promotion of good health particularly for expectant mothers, young children, the elderly and disabled. They also organise “Positive Parenting” courses for parents with pre-school and school age children (details available upon request) and they work closely with the doctors at this practice in child health surveillance. Details of mother and toddlers groups and activities for children in the Burnham area can be found on www.burnhambucks.co.uk
